Sherpaa members create an Episode of Care whenever they need medical or mental health care.
They simply choose “I have a mental health question” and tell us, in their own words about their situation. All Sherpaa members have their own Sherpaa PCP they work with regularly 90% of the time. Sherpaa also employs psychologists. Immediately upon a member creating an Episode of Care, their Sherpaa PCP is alerted about a new Episode of Care they need to respond to. They then read the member’s description to ensure this situation isn’t an emergency nor does it appear there’s a medical problem as the cause of the issue. They then tag the Episode of Care as “mental health” which loops in one of our psychologists into the Episode of Care. The psychologist then sends ~20 questions back to the member to better understand the details to figure out essentially one of three things:
1. Is this a one and done situation that just needs a 15 minute phone or video conversation?
2. Is this a person in need and amenable to traditional therapy? If so, connect them with the most appropriate local therapist.
3. If this is a person who’s not the therapy type, what can we recommend? A book, a support group, an online forum, an app? We try to get super creative there, because therapy isn’t the end all be all.
And, finally, for mild to moderate depression amenable to medication, our doctors do the prescribing and our therapists routinely check in with the patient to see if any tweaks need to be made.
